Pulling Back the Shades: Book Review
Recently, I had the opportunity to read Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh’s newest book, Pulling Back the Shades. If you don’t know a thing about this book, allow me to share it with you.
Basically, the book was written out of a need. Our culture has been turned upside down with the book, 50 Shades of Grey and it’s counterparts. Approximately 70 million, yep, you read that right, million people have read this book! But don’t think that you need to read 50 Shades in order to benefit from Pulling Back the Shades because you don’t.
If you know nothing about 50 Shades of Grey, good, keep it that way! But I’m sure you’ve heard about this popular trilogy either through a friend or social media. I haven’t read the book nor do I plan to, but I felt like I needed to be aware of what’s going on in our culture today and more specifically, how I can help Christian women who have been affected by this phenomenon. That’s why I wanted to read, Pulling Back the Shades.
Millions of women have devoured the erotica series of Fifty Shades and I don’t just mean women who don’t know the Lord, but women who do. Many, according to statistics, were professing Christian women and I thought, hmmm, what is it that they’re missing in the bedroom and how can I possibly encourage them to grow in true intimacy?
So this is where Pulling Back the Shades come in….
Juli and Dannah wrote this book just for you. They spell out that you can be both spiritual and sexual. And if you’ve read 50 Shades they don’t come at you in a condemning and judgmental way but rather in a way to help you experience true intimacy in your marriage.
Book’s excerpt:
Christian women don’t have to choose between being sexual and spiritual. They have legitimate longings that the Church has been afraid to talk about, and books like Fifty Shades of Grey exploit. Whether you are single or married, sexually dead or just looking to revive your sex life, Pulling Back the Shades will address your desire to be both sexual AND spiritual. With solid Biblical teaching and transparent stories, trusted authors Dannah Gresh and Dr. Juli Slattery, offer an unflinching look at the most personal questions women ask. The book offers practical advice for women to address five core longings:
- to be cherished by a man
- to be protected by a strong man
- to rescue a man
- to be sexually alive
- to escape reality
God designed women with these longings and has a plan to satisfy them. It’s time for women to identify their intimate longings and God-honoring ways to fulfill them.
I felt this book addressed real issues that real women are facing today in a world saturated with porn and erotica. We embrace the lies of the Enemy thinking if we watch porn or read erotica we’ll somehow feel fulfilled in our marriage. But these are lies. All lies. Marriage, the way God intended, will bring you to a place of true intimacy and this book will show you how.
Even if you haven’t read 50 Shades, this book will encourage and help you to grow in true intimacy in your marriage. Juli and Dannah discuss sexual topics that all women want to know about. And if you’re single, and you’ve read 50 Shades, this book will come alongside you and encourage and equipping you in your struggles.
I’m thankful that Juli and Dannah took the plunge to work on this project together. Pulling Back the Shades is a much needed resource for today’s Christian woman.
