Why Does My Help Feel Like Criticism to Him?
Hi Jolene,
“Here’s my question. Genesis 2:18 says, ‘Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”‘ God designed me to be my husband’s helper, and I’m trying to live that out. I ask him questions about how things work. I offer a hand while he’s working on a project. But instead of receiving it as help, he hears it as criticism. My help is coming across the wrong way. Why is that happening, and what do I do about it?”

Show Notes
Description: God made the wife a helper (Genesis 2:18), so why does her husband flinch every time she tries? In this episode, Eric and Jolene tackle a listener question about a wife’s biblical role as helper and why her genuine attempts to help are being received as criticism. They dig into the communication breakdowns and personality dynamics underneath this common marriage tension, and Jolene shares her own story of realizing Eric needed something different from her than the help she’d been offering.
In this episode:
- What it truly means to be a “helper” as a wife (Genesis 2:18)
- Why a husband may perceive his wife’s help as criticism, and what’s really going on
- The role of personality differences: the intense wife and the passive husband
- How past wounds, triggers, and defensive patterns shape how help is heard
- The question that changes everything: “What does help look like for you?”
- Jolene’s personal story: realizing Eric needed encouragement, not just hands-on help
- “Reading the room” in your marriage as you would in any other setting
- Why marriages require daily tending, like a garden, or they fall apart
- Husbands are not off the hook: the call against harshness (1 Peter 3:7)
- Self-examination: asking “Did I contribute to this reaction?”
Practical Takeaways:
- Ask your husband: “What does it look like to help you?”
- Try a different angle: “When do you feel most supported by me?”
- Give him time to process, and come back in a couple of days.
- Study your spouse: learn their patterns, triggers, and rhythms.
- Address conflict when the temperature in the relationship is calm, not heated.
- Slow down and communicate vulnerability: “I want to help but I’m afraid I’m doing it wrong.”
